STAY SAFE, learner training event planned.

Coachingdefinition to engender trust. How else will our young work placement learners be honest about thier particular needs? To meet the range of employer needs, as well as a range of individual needs to be differentiated, a training event for all learners is being prepared. Probably with 'Coke& cakes' to help sweeten, a day crammed with important Health and Safety information and activities.

With stages containing: The working enviroment, different for all, but with some generic things like, -what to do in an emergency, or who to speak to if something goes wrong. Then an initial assessment stage, to ensure all needs are fully understood and differentiated. This informs the learner's plan and work in progress, with an eye on how or what can be changed to ensure equality, whilst developing safe behaviours. The next section will be about supervision, both its importance and benefits, again this is a chance to build confidence and rapport, so that an open and transparent relationship is formed. Other outputs for the day will include how to get information Instruction and/or training. From the basics like carrying heavy items, even rushing around, to the safe use of more technical equiptment, particularly for placements in the construction industries.

For our smaller employers, with less than five employees, and therefore unlikely to have thier own safety policy,  a section will be included called, Information, Instruction and Training which draws together the policy framework to start from for them and helps create a safer future for everyone.

Equalities Networks Leadership event

Looking forward to attending this event.  I have found that participation leads to knowledge development.  Like they said if you never ask, you will never know..so if you dont attend, you wont learn much...

Film taking shape

We're now at the stage where we've put together a basic plan of what we want our final product (three minute film) to look like.  We've provisionally called it "Dealing with transgender people: getting it right".  It's now in the hands of the "professionals" who have begun to create the actual film.  Hoping for some updates from them soon and the chance to look at how its coming along.

"Buzzing" after LC Equality and Diversity Conference!

I'm still on a massive high after our Equalitydefinition and Diversity Conference yesterday! Learners from secondary schools and Colleges in Leicester attended the event and focused on how they could implement change with regards to Equality and Diversityy in their own schools and Colleges.

After taking part in an interactive warmup activity and quiz, Learners got the oppourtunity to particpate in open dialogue with fellow learners and workshop faciliatators from the fileds of LGBT, BAME, Disabilitydefinition, Faith, and Refugee and Asylum. Learners then made 'Equality and Diversity' pledges. These consisted of poems, statements, affirmations, even raps about how they would promote, believe in and support E and D.

Some highlights of the day for me were listening to a learners honest and heart felt rap about supporting refugee and asylum seekers and having requests from secondary schools to know more about the project and the work the College has done with regards to E and D.

How great is it that as a College our learners have benefited from the project, but to then have the potential for other young people accross the city to benefit is amazing, were definately giving you your moneys worth NIACEdefinition!!!

Pictures and updates on the project will follow shortly on our webpage

Film, Camera, Action!

Well now we are being filmed!

Community Action Derby have agreed to video the project in action. Last week they interviewed learners and filmed their I.T. session. Employers are currently arrangeing suitable times to talk about their involvement so now it is our turn - Debbie Owen ( the project manager) and I will be before the camera tomorrow. I think it is safe to say that some of us are more comfortable with this than others - however it will be excellent publicity and the learners say they found it a really positive experience.

The project is now on track after some initial hiccups with regard to recruitment. We are holding a 'Sprinboard Intensive' 2 day developmental workshop May 28/29. The aim is to focus on further skill development but also the performance process.. Lots of very positive support within the college and the Dissemination day in July!
